James Kirkland: 'I Can't Wait to Get Back in the Ring'

Unbeaten southpaw junior middleweight (154 pounds) contender James Kirkland, released from Bastrop Federal Prison, in Bastrop, Tex., on Thursday morning after having pled guilty to a charge of gun possession in April of 2009, issued his first public statements through his promoter, Golden Boy Promotions.

The 26-year-old Kirkland (25-0, 22 knockouts), who will spend the remaining months of his sentence in an Austin, Tex., halfway house, will likely end a what will have been a 21-month ring absence by facing one of three opponents on the Dec. 11 under card of an HBO televised main event featuring WBA junior welterweight (140 pounds) champ Amir Khan of England and WBA interim titlist Marcos Rene Maidana of Argentina.

Promoted by Golden Boy Promotions, the HBO televised bout between Khan (23-1, 17 knockouts) and Maidana (29-1, 27 KOs) will be fought at The Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas.
